Filming has been taking place for a BBC Villages by the Sea programme on Arnside. The programme should focus on the maritime history of the village, including Crossfields of Arnside.
Filming included Luna singing the Severn Song in front of Severn and Peggy Blackett sailing in the estuary. Peggy Blackett is a replica of Coch-y-bonddhu which was built by Crossfields for Arthur Ransome in 1934 and later used to teach sailing at Earnseat Prep School, which was situated in Ashmeadow in Arnside. Severn was built in 1912 in Arnside for the Royal Mersey Yacht Club. She sunk in a race in 1914 just days before the start of the First World War and lay underneath the Mersey for 13 years. Severn was rediscovered in 1927, raised to the service and sold to Joe Wallace. The Severn Song was written by Mike Greenwood, whose father and uncle were friends of Joe Wallace.
We are currently raising £40,000 to pay for Severn’s restoration. https://peoplesfundraising.com/donation/severn-restoration
