We are holding an event for Wanderer Dinghies, giving Wanderer Dinghy Owners a chance to sail on the stunning estuary at Arnside with views towards the Lakeland Hills. Arnside has a long sailing history with Victorians holding regattas and Arthur Ransome’s Swallow built in the village. The event is free to members of Arnside Sailing Club and Wanderer Class Owners Association, otherwise £20 per boat.
Wanderers are a stable family dinghy which can carry up to 4 people. They were designed by Ian Proctor, one of great names in boat design, who is also responsible for the design of Wayfarers and Toppers. The first Wanderer was designed for Margaret Dye in 1984, the wife of Frank Dye, the famous Wayfarer sailor who sailed from Scotland to Norway in 1964 in his Wayfarer, which was called “Wanderer” encountering a Force 9 gale on the way capsizing four times and breaking the boat’s mast.
It may include informal racing or a cruise out into the estuary towards Holme Island and Grange over Sands (shown in the above photo). The Sailing Club’s Clubhouse in the Old Customs House overlooking the estuary will be open for socialising afterwards.
The event is being held in partnership with the Wanderer Class Owners Association
